Graphic logos lie somewhere between iconic and illustrative logos - detailed enough to be recognizable as an actual object, yet simple enough to translate into most media usages. At the studio, we view graphic, or graphical logos as hybrids between simple icons and complex illustrations. More

Illustration logosIllustration logos
While certainly not for every application, illustrative logos can be a dynamic addition to any marketing arsenal if appropriate. An illustrative design can become a unique promotional tool and works well on many types of marketing materials including wearables. More

There are an infinite number of variables that are possible with any corporate identity design project - style, lines, theme, etc - and while many business logos may 'straddle' the various types or combine features of each, our designers have found that most design 'treatments' will fall into four distinct categories; Text, Iconic, Graphic and Illustrative.

While we're not suggesting these categories be viewed as absolutes, and many logos have the features of several types, this is a fairly basic, yet accurate, overview for those new to the design process.

Each logo type has it's merits, while others have disadvantages. Some types are more appropriate for certain market segments than others. By being familiar with the different versions, and their strengths and weaknesses, you can make an educated decision on which logo type is more suited to your requirements and give you an idea of what you're looking for before talking to, or working with, a designer.
