Closeup of a pixel based artwork

A Pixel based image is made up from a grid of varying colored pixels that when viewed from a distance form the overall image details. Pixel based images can be CMYK or RGB color palettes. Pixel based images are resolution dependent and must be prepared specifically for the usage planned. A 72 dpi Pixel based image can be used in electronic media (web) while a 266 (or higher) dpi image is required for print. Due to the number of colours required to create images (even logos that appear to be spot colour - see comparison of the same logo below) most Pixel based images will require Four Colour Process printing, rather than the much more economical (and accurate) Spot Colour printing.

A comparison of the printing qualities of Vector and Pixel based images

It's important to note that Pixel based images cannot be enlarged without image degradation (see illustrations).

Even logos that should be printed as Spot Colours, can't be.

Pixel based images can be reduced safely. Editing of Pixel based images requires the use of a bitmap editing programmer (also know as 'paint' programmes) such as Adobe Photoshop.

Resolution
Varied. 300 dpi (PX) Print, 72 dpi (PX) for electronic.

Uses
Web sites, certain print applications (unless in grayscale, Pixel based images will require Four Colour Process printing), special FX.

File names
Pixel based formats have the file extensions .jpg, .gif, .tif

Pixel Based Formats - Properties

Advantages and distinct properties of your Pixel based logo files.

RGB Colour Compatible RGB colour reproduction available. Your logo can be converted to feature RGB colours for use in electronic publishing and on web sites.
CMYK colour compatible CMYK colour reproduction available. Your logo can be reproduced in conjunction with other CMYK images (ie: colour photographs in brochures and catalogues). Will require four colour process printing. Image must be of sufficient resolution.
Small file size Small file size. Some Pixel based formats (.jpg, .gif) of your logo can be transported to printers, design vendors & transmitted electronically (via e-mail) efficiently. Higher resolution versions of your logo may be quite large and require alternative methods of distribution. File size is also dependent on format. A .gif file can be small, while the same image in a .tif file can be substantiality larger.
Web friendly Web friendly. Most Pixel based versions of your logo can be used on your web site (with the correct resolution, 72 DPI, and correct colour palette - RGB).
Reduction Scalable (reduction). Your logo can be scaled down without any image degradation. Pixel based images cannot be enlarged without losing image integrity.
Empty background Transparency available. (.gif format only) Your logo can be placed on a background colour on a web page. For optimum results, this may require some editing. .jpg formats will require the entire footprint of your logo for web page usage. Other Pixel based formats can have 'transparent' backgrounds, but this will require the creation of a 'clipping path' using graphic design software such as Adobe Photoshop. Images with 'clipping paths' are generally not compatible with your web site.
Special FX filters Special FX friendly. Pixel based images can utilize special FX filters in desktop 'paint' programmes. You can apply lens flares, glows and other Pixel based FX to your logo.
Greyscale Create Black/White greyscale (halftone) logo. Your logo can be converted to a Black and White greyscale (halftone) version. Some colours that contrast vividly, may appear tonally very similar if a straight conversion is performed.
